Pink Discharge After Sex: Causes and Possible Consequences

Normally, post-coitaldischarge is profuse and transparent. Pink discharge after a sexual intercourse is a consequence of slight blood loss. It can be associated with the affection of normal or atrophied endothelial lining of the vagina, oncological pathologies or disturbance of the course of pregnancy.

A large amount of auxiliary lubrication is secreted during the sexual intercourse. It is semi-fluid and transparent. Pink coloring of discharge has to do with blood spots present in it. A little amount of blood can easily be diluted in cervical mucus and that is why the color becomes rather “attenuated”.

Appearance of light-pink discharge after sexual intercourse is an unfavorable symptom, since it indicates to the disturbed integrity of certain vessels. Most often, affection is inflicted to blood capillaries of the vaginal mucous lining (due to a trauma) or the uterine cervix (particularly, on the precipitated areas – neoplasmas).

Traumatic pink bleeding after sex

Most often vaginal mucous lining, which has been atrophied and thinned down due to the menopause, has a predisposition to traumas. In women at late adulthood, cell regeneration processes slow down and the production of lubricating substances reduces as well. Thus, a sexual intercourse may precipitate formation of micro fissures and frets and consequently, bleeding after sex. Preventive measures against such traumas, as well as their complication (itching, genital discomfort), may include application of special lubricants. Medically induced suspension of menopause is also a possible variant.

The normal mucous lining may be traumatized during an extremely rough coitus or an act of violence. In this case pink spotting after sex is accompanied by acute pain and possible disturbance of the urethral function. These cases require medical observation for sake of prevention of infectious complications.

Pink spotting after sex – a symptom of oncological pathology

The so-called precancerous diseases of the uterine cervix (erosion, dysplasia), as well as endometrial or cervical cancer and cervical polyps are characterized by irritation of the mucous lining, which causes bleeding of almost denuded vessels of the surface.

Sometimes, the following symptoms go in line with post-coital bleeding:

  • Profuse watery discharge;
  • Abdominal cramps, not associated with the period;
  • Urinary, fecal or winds incontinence.

Unfortunately, malignant processes of the reproductive system may not be accompanied with expressed symptoms, which is the most common reason of untimely diagnostics.

The only solution to this problem is careful screening of these diseases. For the maintenance of the woman’s health, it is required to undergo a periodic heath examination at a gynecologist, with subsequent histological analysis of cervical scrape.

What should be done in case light-pink discharge appears after sex in pregnant women?

Any bleeding during pregnancy should put the woman on alert, since it may point to the disturbance of its normal course. Even the slightest amount of pink discharge after sexual intercourse is a sufficient reason for immediate hospitalization. Untreated bleeding during childbearing exposes to danger not only the mother’s life, but also the life of the fetus.

Chronic exhaustive bleeding between periods, including pink discharge after sex, constitute a common cause of anemia in many women. It can be corrected by intake of iron containing drugs, but the problem can be fixed and eliminated only after the detection of its origin, which can easily be done in a clinic.
